The Phurba dagger is sort of a Tibetan magic wand. In Tibetan mythology it is used as a yantra to store personal power and also for protection against demons. It is one of the more occult items that stems from the Bonpo shaman religion of pre-Buddhist Tibet. This Phurba dagger is a magnificent rendition in brass, measuring over fourteen inches in length. It's heavy duty too, weighing two and quarter pounds. On top is a horse totem and three faces of Malakendra (the protector of the Buddhist faith) over a dorje in the middle. On the bottom are thre mystical creatures each coming out of the previous mouth ending in a three sided dagger blade with a snake on each side. The triple blade of the phurpa symbolizes the overcoming or cutting through of the three root poisons of ignorance, desire, and hatred, and also represents control over the three times of past, present and future. The triangular shape represents the element of fire and symbolizes wrathful activity. The tenacious grip of the makara-head at the top of the blade represents its ferocious activity.
When using the phurpa, the practitioner first meditates, then recites the sadhana of the phurpa, and then invites the deity to enter the phurpa. As he does so, the practitioner visualizes that he is frightening and conquering the evil spirits by placing the evil under the point of the phurpa. Or sometimes the practitioner visualizes throwing the phurpa in order to impale and subdue the spirits. The success will depend on the practitioner's spirituality, concentration, motivation, and his karmic connections with the deity of the phurpa and the evil spirits.

The Twenty-One Praises to Tara are practiced in Palyul Centers around the world every Sunday morning. In the monasteries, the practice is conducted every day after the Sang offering in the Monasteries. Thupten Shedrub Gyatso, who was a Tulku in one of the Palyul Monasteries, wrote this commentary. His present incarnation, Rago Chogtrul currently lives in Tibet.
"From the tantra known as the 'Twenty-One Praises of Tara' spoken by the buddha Samantabhadra arises a system of practice with 21 emanations - 1 for each verse of praise. Each form of Tara has a specific color and accomplishes a special activity. Based on that, there are 3 well known and distinct lineages for the set of 21 Taras; Pandita Suryagupta, Lord Atisha and the lineage from the Nyingma Lama - Longchenpa. Aside from these 3 there are other less known sets of 21 Taras as well as numerous individual forms and lineages. The 3 main lineages do not share the same iconographic forms. In the Atisha system all the Taras appear in the same basic posture with equal faces and hands and only differ in the color of the body and vase held in the right hand of each. Some have a slightly fierce facial expression. Basically the colors are a code for the 4 activities: pacifying (white), enriching (yellow), subjugating (red) and eliminating (black.) Mixed colors such as orange indicate a combination of qualities, tempered by strong associations."
Green Tara as the number one here, since she is considered by all systems to be the "originator" from which all other Taras emanate, although she is usually not included in the 21. With several lineages by which the 21 Taras are categorized, there is no universal agreement on their names, the order in which they appear, or even on all of their faculties and powers, so we will present them here in as complete fashion as we are able, recognizing that there will be mistakes of omission and probably of commission as well. (We beg forgiveness, and encourage more knowledgeable readers to send us their suggestions or corrections.)
However, for the purpose of the practice of the "Twenty-one Praises of Tara", it is not necessary for all of the deities' images and information to be in order. These are only presented so as to give the reader a good feel for all of the Taras and to illustrate their salient features.
